Product Review: Vitamin Gum

I always try to be healthy. Well as healthy as I can anyway. I believe in living and enjoying life, so I also admit to having the odd treat of chocolate, sweets and deserts. As long as it is all in moderation. But luckily I generally eat a healthy diet, with plenty of vegetables and fruit. Actually I am a bit of a fruitaholic, and some would probably claim that I eat way more fruit every day than I should!

But even so, blood tests show that (in spite of eating the daily multivitamin)I am low in certain vitamins and minerals, and now being pregnant, I am sure this has not improved, I am certainly often feeling tired and drained! Then I was introduced to *Vitamin Gum;

What They Say:
Vitamin-Infused Vitamin Gum freshens breath while providing eight essential vitamins. Sugar free and in three delicious long-lasting flavours, Vitamin Gum contains vitamins A, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, D and E, with all eight vitamins important for maintaining energy levels, immunity, eyesight, strong teeth, and bones, just two pieces provide 25 per cent of your recommended daily intake.

RRP: $3.50 – Available at 7-Eleven and selected BP stores

What I Say:
Having never seen or heard of Vitamin Gum before, and to be quite honest, being a little sceptical about it, as we possibly get vitamins from chewing gum, I decided to look a little further into the Vitamin Gum.

According to Vitamin Gum, it has been proven that "chewing gum is one of the fastest and most effective ways to absorb vitamins, because they are absorbed quickly and effectively through the lining of the mouth into the blood stream". To ensure you get the most from the Vitamin Gum, it needs to be chewed for at least 10 minutes to ensure the release of vitamins into your body. Sounds good to me!

The Vitamin Gum comes in three flavours, spearmint, peppermint and grape, and they are all sugar-free. I tried the two of them, peppermint and grape.

The Peppermint one was quite refreshing, and generally my preferred chewing gum flavour. The stronger the better to freshen up my breath. I also tried the Grape flavour, which was also very nice, although a little sweet, so not something I personally would chew regularly, - but then on the other hand, it help when I had cravings for something sweet in the afternoons.

Vitamin Gum claims that the flavours are lasting, and generally I did find that the flavour lasted for a while, or at least for 15 minutes or so, so long enough for the vitamins to be released. But generally I have to say that I don’t usually chew my chewing gum for much longer than that anyway!

To ensure you get the recommended daily vitamin intake, the packaging suggest that you have 3-4 serves of the Vitamin Gum per day, and with a serve being 2 pieces, that’s 6-8 pieces of chewing gum – so with just 12 pieces per pack, it won’t last you long, and will also become a little expensive long term.

Obviously chewing this Vitamin Gum has not really helped with my pregnancy tiredness, and I honestly didn’t expect it to either, I don’t think anything will. But regardless I have thoroughly enjoyed trying the Vitamin Gum as a delicious alternative.

Of course it is never recommended that you rely on chewing gum (or any other vitamin supplement for that matter), but rather you should get your daily intake of vitamins from a good balanced diet. However, it is a great product, and a fantastic alternative to normal chewing gum if you are feeling a little tired and drained, and feel you need an extra “boost”.
